Halloween  is a holiday celebrated on October 31.

It has roots in the Celtic festival of Samhain and the Christian holy day of All Saints’ Day. It is largely a secular celebration, but some have expressed strong feelings about perceived religious overtones.

The day is often associated with orange and black, and is strongly associated with symbols like the jack-o’-lantern. Halloween activities include trick-or-treating, wearing costumes, ghost tours, bonfires, costume parties, visiting haunted attractions, carving jack-o’-lanterns, pranking people, reading scary stories, and watching horror movies.

The Perfect Pear

180px-Pears  Did you know…

Pears are consumed fresh, canned, as juice, and dried. The juice can also be used in jellies and jams, usually in combination with other fruits or berries. Fermented pear juice is called perry or pear cider.

Pears will ripen faster if placed next to bananas in a fruit bowl. They stay fresh longer if kept in a fridge.

Pear wood is one of the preferred materials in the manufacture of high-quality woodwind instruments and furniture. It is also used for wood carving, and as a firewood to produce aromatic smoke for smoking meat or tobacco.

We love pears at our house and are looking forward to using these silver placecard holders and cookies cutters this autumn season.

Why do leaves change color?  According to my kids, “it’s because they are tired of being green”.  Now, this answer may not earn them an ‘A’ on their science report, but I thought it was pretty amusing and I will remember our little chat the next time I set out these Yellow Leaf Place Card Favor Boxes.

Do you have an amusing fall anecdote?

Red Apple Weddings

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Red Apples go hand in hand with the fall season and bring back memories of picking apples in the orchard but you can really use them any time of year.

Here are some Red Apple Wedding ideas:

For the fall theme, have you wedding in an apple orchard for instant and natural ambiance or a big red barn filled with hay bales, little white lights and red apple candles on the table.  You can make these yourself by carving a tealight size hole in the apple with a candle carver.

Your guests can enjoy the crisp autumn air outside while toasting the happy couple with sparkling apple cider or hot apple cider spiced with rum and cinnamon.

For dessert, don’t forget the the hot apple pie with cinnamon ice cream or candied apples with a personalized tag attached.

Send your guests home with a jar of apple butter or a mini apple candle.  It will be an event to remember.

Fall Leaves

fallleaftray

I grew up with a front yard filled with Maple Leaves and every Fall I would volunteer to rake them up to help with the “family chores”.  I just loved getting them in a big pile and taking the Nestea plunge.  It was so fun, I’d do it again and again until the leaves became crumbs.  Then it really was a chore to rake up the leaves or what was left of them.  But for a few glorious minutes, there was a total abandonment which renewed me for another year.  The picture on this Fall Leaves Tray remined of all the Maple leaves I have raked over the years, and instantly brought back some fun childhood memories.  What are your best Fall Leaves memories?
